In the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to enroll in a thought-provoking course titled "PHIL 355E: Cybersecurity Ethics." This course focused on equipping students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to tackle the ethical challenges and moral dilemmas inherent in the field of cybersecurity. The course aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ethical principles, privacy concerns, legal regulations, and societal implications that encompass the world of cybersecurity.
The course began by delving into foundational ethical principles that underpin the field of cybersecurity. It encouraged students to consider questions such as the moral responsibilities of cybersecurity professionals and the implications of their actions on individuals and society. We explored the intricate issue of privacy within the realm of cybersecurity. This topic involved discussions on data protection, surveillance, and the delicate balance between security and personal privacy.
Understanding the legal framework surrounding cybersecurity was another crucial aspect of the course. We analyzed laws and regulations that guide ethical behavior in the field, along with their implications on professional conduct.
The course encouraged critical thinking about the broader societal consequences of cybersecurity decisions. This included discussions on the impact of security breaches, cyber-attacks, and the role of cybersecurity in safeguarding critical infrastructure. A significant part of the course involved in-depth analysis of case studies and real-world scenarios. These practical examples allowed us to apply ethical principles to complex, real-life situations, fostering critical thinking and decision-making skills.

The "PHIL 355E: Cybersecurity Ethics" course significantly broadened my perspective on the ethical dimensions of cybersecurity. It underscored the importance of not only technical expertise but also ethical considerations in this field. The ability to analyze and make sound ethical decisions is crucial for professionals in cybersecurity, as their actions can impact individuals and society at large.
As I pursue my career goals in mobile app development and automotive computer systems, the ethical foundation I gained in this course will be invaluable. It has made me acutely aware of the ethical implications of my work, whether it's designing secure apps to protect user data or ensuring the safety of computer systems in vehicles.

Overall, this course was instrumental in helping me develop the ethical compass required for a successful career in the technology industry, and I am grateful for the insights and critical thinking skills it provided.
